Merle Haggard motivation
Behind Haggard's rather pragmatic, hardheaded exterior (mentioned in the previous chapter), he is an adventurer and a risk-taker at heart. His cool, conservative manner masks a much more fiery core.
He is a person who thrives on challenge, and he often feels that he must battle his way through life, relying on no one and nothing but his own strength, intelligence and courage. Merle Haggard believes in being totally honest, true to himself and his own vision and convictions, even if it means standing alone. Honesty, integrity, personal honor and authenticity are Haggard's gods, and he has no sympathy for weakness of character in others.
Merle Haggard craves the freedom to do things in his own way, and he works very well independently. Cooperating with others or carrying out another's will is not his style. Merle likes to be the chief - or to go it alone.
Merle Haggard loves action and if others are settling down into a nice, comfortable little rut, then he is always ready to stir things up, do something new, make changes and introduce some fresh blood. Routine and sameness are tantamount to death for him. He is not afraid of trying something that has never been done before, and even though he may sometimes be perceived as a fool, Merle Haggard also discovers, invents and initiates things that others will later emulate. Taking risks and following his own star are the breath of life for Haggard, and he wilts (or gets very frustrated and angry) if he cannot do this.
He is spontaneous, impulsive, direct, enthusiastic and assertive. Merle Haggard believes in the power of positive thinking and positive action, and he perceives himself as a strong, even invincible, person. Merle Haggard hates being ill or in a position of dependency. Accepting his own human limitations and emotional needs is often difficult for him.
He is basically aggressive in his attitudes and less adept at relating to others, picking up on subtle messages and nuances, listening, nurturing and harmonizing. He is often so fired up about his own projects or goals that he inadvertently runs over or ignores other people's feelings and interests. Being receptive and appreciative of others' contributions, ideas and feelings would be highly instrumental in improving Haggard's relationships. His impatience to get on with things causes Merle Haggard to be rather insensitive, thereby alienating others unnecessarily. He also frequently tries to accomplish his goals through anger or temper tantrums. Merle Haggard would gain much by learning to slow down, relax and sometimes just let things be, however his energetic, restless nature rarely allows Merle Haggard to do so.
The urge to learn and to communicate is essential to Merle Haggard, and he expresses himself very well through writing, teaching or sharing ideas and information. Haggard is persuasive and fluent with language.
Restless and inquisitive, Merle enjoys being mobile and taking short trips and excursions in order to see for himself what is going on in the world around him.
Haggard's subconscious needs and feelings blend well with his conscious intentions and desires, therefore Merle Haggard is able to proceed in his life's pursuits relatively unhampered by internal resistance or inconsistency. Merle's male-female relationships will reflect this state of internal harmony also.
Merle Haggard tends to be very impressionable and psychically open, and as a youngster, he could have been dominated in his relationships with more forceful personalities. Afraid of confrontation, Haggard may have become passive, identified himself as a helpless victim, or tried to gain his desires in underhanded ways.
Merle's hypersensitivity to his environment is apt to be a challenge for him in other ways as well. Pollutants, ugliness, or dissonance in any form is apt to affect Merle Haggard more than most people.
Merle Haggard has a great need for security which he may seek in a partner who could be older than him and perhaps married before. Merle Haggard probably feels restrained in expressing affection, giving the impression of being cool and indifferent toward those he loves.
