Behind Angelou's proud and magnanimous demeanor (as described on the previous page) lays a real go-getter. Others feel that she is rather narcissistic. Maya Angelou should strive to always be aware of others' needs and concerns to prove this criticism wrong!

She is a person who thrives on challenge, and she often feels that she must battle her way through life, relying on no one and nothing but her own strength, intelligence and courage. Maya Angelou believes in being totally honest, true to herself and her own vision and convictions, even if it means standing alone. Honesty, integrity, personal honor and authenticity are Angelou's gods, and she has no sympathy for weakness of character in others.

Maya Angelou craves the freedom to do things in her own way, and she works very well independently. Cooperating with others or carrying out another's will is not her style. Maya likes to be the chief - or to go it alone.

Maya Angelou loves action and if others are settling down into a nice, comfortable little rut, then she is always ready to stir things up, do something new, make changes and introduce some fresh blood. Routine and sameness are tantamount to death for her. She is not afraid of trying something that has never been done before, and even though she may sometimes be perceived as a fool, Maya Angelou also discovers, invents and initiates things that others will later emulate. Taking risks and following her own star are the breath of life for Angelou, and she wilts (or gets very frustrated and angry) if she cannot do this.

She is spontaneous, impulsive, direct, enthusiastic and assertive. Maya Angelou believes in the power of positive thinking and positive action, and she perceives herself as a strong, even invincible, person. Maya Angelou hates being ill or in a position of dependency. Accepting her own human limitations and emotional needs is often difficult for her.

She is basically aggressive in her attitudes and less adept at relating to others, picking up on subtle messages and nuances, listening, nurturing and harmonizing. She is often so fired up about her own projects or goals that she inadvertently runs over or ignores other people's feelings and interests. Being receptive and appreciative of others' contributions, ideas and feelings would be highly instrumental in improving Angelou's relationships. Her impatience to get on with things causes Maya Angelou to be rather insensitive, thereby alienating others unnecessarily. She may hide her interests or inclinations, except from those who know Maya very intimately. Maya Angelou is rarely content with herself and her life, and she has an inner urge to be continually going farther or deeper than her ever have before. Maya has also a strong interest in social power and the role that money and economics play in people's lives.

Her conscious intentions and goals are frequently opposed by her unconscious beliefs and desires. If Maya Angelou overrides her instincts and emotions because they seem to lead her in a direction diametrically opposed to the one she consciously desires, her emotions can become unruly. Poor relationships with women and/or difficulties in close one-on-one relationships are also a reflection of this tendency. However, if Maya Angelou attends to her emotional urges and feelings and listens to the voice of her intuition, dreams and gut feelings, she will derive greater satisfaction from a more balanced life.

She is blessed with abundant optimism, self-confidence and cheerful generosity. Her good will and friendliness win her many allies. Maya Angelou also has grand visions and aspirations, and the desire to succeed in life in a big way. Maya expects the best, and usually gets it.

However she also has a heavier side which keeps Angelou's optimism from becoming ungrounded or overblown. Maya Angelou tends to seesaw between her faith, vision and high aspirations, and her caution and realism (or fear!). She is able to tackle long, difficult projects and see them through, for Angelou possesses self-discipline, concentration and perseverance. Maya Angelou also has a strong sense of responsibility and is very conscientious about fulfilling her obligations. Angelou often does things because she feels it is expected of her.

She is intensely willful, zealous, and fanatical though Maya often hides the intensity of her feelings and her personal motives and desires. Angelou is infatuated with power and has an almost compulsive desire for personal recognition and the desire to be "somebody". Maya Angelou tends to worship heroes who have powerful personal magnetism and charisma and often seeks to emulate them. Maya Angelou both fears, and is intensely fascinated with, death and the hidden, secret, dark side of life.
