Although Martha Graham approaches life with curiosity and a willingness to learn and try new things (as stated in the previous chapter), at heart she is much more stable and reliable than she appears. Graham is, in fact, quite solid though she can leave the impression of being rather changeable. She is also not quite as flexible and adaptable as one might assume initially. Graham can act silly or experiment with a lot of different things, but does not lose perspective or balance.

She is a steadfast and patient soul, capable of tremendous devotion, dedication, endurance and constancy. The ability to follow through and stick with things is one of her greatest assets. Once Graham's course is set, she pursues it tenaciously until it is completed, stubbornly resisting any attempts to sway her from her purpose.

Martha Graham has a very practical nature; she wants to see concrete, tangible results for her efforts, and she is not one to concoct wild dreams that are unlikely to come into fruition. She is strong-willed, forceful and independent. Graham knows what she wants, but sometimes may act too impulsively, causing quarrels or disagreement with others. Martha Graham tends to judge herself and others quite severely, but she is very sincere, honest and trustworthy.
