John Steinbeck is actually a more sensitive, vulnerable and compassionate person than his proud and somewhat vain manner (described in the previous chapter) would suggest. Although he maintains a strong, confident facade, he is actually quite soft, understanding and caring.

At heart he is very gentle, impressionable and receptive - a dreamer.
