John Cardinal O'Connor
John has two very different sides to him. Sometimes he is the playful, curious child described in the previous chapter, and at other times he is the serious, detached adult. Few people can vacillate between these two extremes as much as John does. Actually, his detachment and objectivity is evident even when he is joking. If he loses touch with his lighter, playful side (possibly in later life) John Cardinal O'Connor will become increasingly bitter and cynical. His deeply conservative nature (discussed below) holds his restlessness in check, and he is actually less willing to bend than one would imagine from his initial appearance.
Serious, disciplined, and quietly ambitious, he is driven to prove himself and to achieve material accomplishments and success. His work, his position in the world, and his contributions to society are very important to O'Connor. John Cardinal O'Connor will persevere through enormous hardship and frustration in order to reach a goal he has set for himself, and he often sacrifices much in the area of personal relationships and home life in order to do so.
John Cardinal O'Connor has a thoughtful, quiet, and self-contained disposition and does not readily show his inner feelings and needs. John Cardinal O'Connor seems to be always in control, capable, efficient, and strong. He is often the person in the family or group who is given more responsibility (and more work) than the others. He is highly conscientious and even as a child he possessed great maturity, soberness, and worldly wisdom.
He is basically a pragmatic realist, and though he may have all sorts of dreams, ideals and colorful theories, he feels that the ultimate test of a concept is its practical usefulness. John has an innate shrewdness and business sense, and there is a bit of the cynic in him as well.
He is clear-headed, detached and objective, and is not swayed by emotional dramatics. Often he is authoritarian - strictly fair, but without mercy. John Cardinal O'Connor has a great respect for tradition and even if he does not agree with certain laws, he will abide by them or work to change them, but never flagrantly disregard them. Careful and conservative, John Cardinal O'Connor plays by the rules.
He is subtle, understated, quiet, deep, not easy to know intimately, and never superficial. He is a modest person and sometimes overly self-critical. Giving himself (and others) permission to feel, to play, to be spontaneous and silly, and to be weak and vulnerable sometimes, is not easy for O'Connor.
O'Connor's strong points are his depth and thoroughness, patience, tenacity, and faithfulness. His faults are a tendency to be rigid and inflexible, and too serious.
John Cardinal O'Connor craves intense experiences and is attracted to aspects of life that are strange, unfathomable, or taboo. He may hide his interests or inclinations, except from those who know John very intimately. John Cardinal O'Connor is rarely content with himself and his life, and he has an inner urge to be continually going farther or deeper than him ever have before. John has also a strong interest in social power and the role that money and economics play in people's lives.
O'Connor's subconscious needs and feelings blend well with his conscious intentions and desires, therefore John Cardinal O'Connor is able to proceed in his life's pursuits relatively unhampered by internal resistance or inconsistency. John's male-female relationships will reflect this state of internal harmony also.
He is direct, energetic, sometimes aggressive and combative. John Cardinal O'Connor often feels that he needs to fight to get what he wants, and he tends to have a "me-first" attitude that angers or irritates others. He is hasty, restless, impatient, and sometimes reckless.
John Cardinal O'Connor has a sensitive physique, is impressionable and prone to external influences. John should guard against the tendency to escape through drugs, alcohol etc. His imagination is very vivid and O'Connor is likely to dream of big things.
