James D. Watson motivation
Behind Watson's rather pragmatic, hardheaded exterior (mentioned in the previous chapter), he is an adventurer and a risk-taker at heart. His cool, conservative manner masks a much more fiery core.
He is a person who thrives on challenge, and he often feels that he must battle his way through life, relying on no one and nothing but his own strength, intelligence and courage. James D. Watson believes in being totally honest, true to himself and his own vision and convictions, even if it means standing alone. Honesty, integrity, personal honor and authenticity are Watson's gods, and he has no sympathy for weakness of character in others.
James D. Watson craves the freedom to do things in his own way, and he works very well independently. Cooperating with others or carrying out another's will is not his style. James likes to be the chief - or to go it alone.
James D. Watson loves action and if others are settling down into a nice, comfortable little rut, then he is always ready to stir things up, do something new, make changes and introduce some fresh blood. Routine and sameness are tantamount to death for him. He is not afraid of trying something that has never been done before, and even though he may sometimes be perceived as a fool, James D. Watson also discovers, invents and initiates things that others will later emulate. Taking risks and following his own star are the breath of life for Watson, and he wilts (or gets very frustrated and angry) if he cannot do this.
He is spontaneous, impulsive, direct, enthusiastic and assertive. James D. Watson believes in the power of positive thinking and positive action, and he perceives himself as a strong, even invincible, person. James D. Watson hates being ill or in a position of dependency. Accepting his own human limitations and emotional needs is often difficult for him.
He is basically aggressive in his attitudes and less adept at relating to others, picking up on subtle messages and nuances, listening, nurturing and harmonizing. He is often so fired up about his own projects or goals that he inadvertently runs over or ignores other people's feelings and interests. Being receptive and appreciative of others' contributions, ideas and feelings would be highly instrumental in improving Watson's relationships. His impatience to get on with things causes James D. Watson to be rather insensitive, thereby alienating others unnecessarily. He also frequently tries to accomplish his goals through anger or temper tantrums. James D. Watson would gain much by learning to slow down, relax and sometimes just let things be, however his energetic, restless nature rarely allows James D. Watson to do so.
The urge to learn and to communicate is essential to James D. Watson, and he expresses himself very well through writing, teaching or sharing ideas and information. Watson is persuasive and fluent with language.
Restless and inquisitive, James enjoys being mobile and taking short trips and excursions in order to see for himself what is going on in the world around him.
He is blessed with abundant optimism, self-confidence and cheerful generosity. His good will and friendliness win him many allies. James D. Watson also has grand visions and aspirations, and the desire to succeed in life in a big way. James expects the best, and usually gets it.
However he also has a more somber side, which keeps Watson's optimism from becoming ungrounded or overblown. James D. Watson tends to seesaw between his faith, vision and high aspirations, and his caution and realism (or fear!). He cannot and does not rely on good luck or grace alone, and he accepts the need for hard work. His skeptical or "somber" side is described below.
Realistic and practical, James D. Watson sets goals for himself that are modest enough for him to actually achieve. He is able to tackle long, difficult projects and see them through, for Watson possesses self-discipline, concentration and perseverance. James D. Watson also has a strong sense of responsibility and is very conscientious about fulfilling his obligations. Watson often does things because he feels it is expected of him.
He is intensely willful, zealous, and fanatical though James often hides the intensity of his feelings and his personal motives and desires. Watson is infatuated with power and has an almost compulsive desire for personal recognition and the desire to be "somebody". James D. Watson tends to worship heroes who have powerful personal magnetism and charisma and often seeks to emulate them. James D. Watson both fears, and is intensely fascinated with, death and the hidden, secret, dark side of life.
