Isaac Asimov motivation
Isaac has two very different sides to him. Sometimes he is the playful, curious child described in the previous chapter while at others he is the serious, detached adult. Few people can vacillate between these two extremes to the extent that Isaac does. In fact his detachment and objectivity is evident even when he is joking. If he loses touch with his lighter, playful side (possibly in later life), Isaac Asimov will become increasingly bitter and cynical. His deeply conservative nature (discussed below) holds his restlessness in check, and he is actually less willing to bend than one would imagine based on his initial appearance.
Serious, disciplined and quietly ambitious, he is driven to prove himself and to achieve material accomplishments and success. His work, his position in the world, and his contributions to society are very important to Asimov. Isaac Asimov will persevere through enormous hardship and frustration in order to reach a goal he has set for himself, and he often sacrifices much in the area of personal relationships and home life in order to do so.
Isaac Asimov has a thoughtful, quiet and self-contained disposition and does not readily show his inner feelings and needs. Isaac Asimov seems to always be in control, capable, efficient and strong. He is often the person in the family or group who is given more responsibility (and more work) than the others. He is highly conscientious and even as a child he possessed great maturity, soberness, and worldly wisdom.
He is basically a pragmatic realist, and though he may have all sorts of dreams, ideals and colorful theories, he feels that the ultimate test of a concept is its practical usefulness. Isaac has an innate shrewdness and business sense, and there is a bit of the cynic in him as well.
He is clear-headed, detached and objective, and is not swayed by emotional dramatics. He is often authoritarian - strictly fair, but without mercy. Isaac Asimov has a great respect for tradition and even if he does not agree with certain laws, he will abide by them or strive to change them, but never flagrantly disregard them. Cautious and conservative, Isaac Asimov plays by the rules.
He is subtle, understated, quiet, deep, not easy to get to know intimately, and never superficial. He is a modest person and sometimes overly self-critical. Giving himself (and others) permission to feel, play, be spontaneous and silly, and sometimes weak and vulnerable is not easy for Asimov.
Asimov's strong points are his depth and thoroughness, patience, tenacity and faithfulness. His faults are a tendency to be rigid and inflexible, and too serious.
Isaac Asimov craves intense experiences and is attracted to aspects of life that are strange, unfathomable, or taboo. He may hide his interests or inclinations, except from those who know Isaac very intimately. Isaac Asimov is rarely content with himself and his life, and he has an inner urge to be continually going farther or deeper than him ever have before. Isaac has also a strong interest in social power and the role that money and economics play in people's lives.
Realistic and practical, Isaac Asimov sets goals for himself that are modest enough for him to actually achieve. He is able to tackle long, difficult projects and see them through, for Asimov possesses self-discipline, concentration and perseverance. Isaac Asimov also has a strong sense of responsibility and is very conscientious about fulfilling his obligations. Asimov often does things because he feels it is expected of him.
While he is realistic and conscientious (or overly conscientious), as described above, Isaac Asimov also has an otherworldly, dreamy, or mystically-inclined side, as described below.
Isaac Asimov tends to be very impressionable and psychically open, and as a youngster, he could have been dominated in his relationships with more forceful personalities. Afraid of confrontation, Asimov may have become passive, identified himself as a helpless victim, or tried to gain his desires in underhanded ways.
Isaac's hypersensitivity to his environment is apt to be a challenge for him in other ways as well. Pollutants, ugliness, or dissonance in any form is apt to affect Isaac Asimov more than most people.
He is infused with a sense of personal destiny or mission and can be extremely driven, obsessed and fanatical. Learning about power and how to use it effectively is definitely on his agenda. Isaac Asimov confronts abusive power, tyranny and dominating people who will teach him about power and eventually force Asimov to claim his own.
Isaac Asimov tends to become excited and upset at the slightest cause, generating tension with others. Isaac also could encounter strange experiences or coincidences with others. He may have a feeling of being different than others and he wants to be his own person.
