Gary Oldman motivation
Although Gary Oldman appears gentle and sympathetic toward others (as explained in the previous chapter), he is also a "warrior". Oldman sometimes feels torn between these two facets of his character: the sensitive, tenderhearted, home-loving side, and the assertive, competitive, risk-taking side. People who first meet Gary Oldman often think that he is a "softy", but later find out that he is strong willed and pursues his goals aggressively.
He is a person who thrives on challenge, and he often feels that he must battle his way through life, relying on no one and nothing but his own strength, intelligence and courage. Gary Oldman believes in being totally honest, true to himself and his own vision and convictions, even if it means standing alone. Honesty, integrity, personal honor and authenticity are Oldman's gods, and he has no sympathy for weakness of character in others.
Gary Oldman craves the freedom to do things in his own way, and he works very well independently. Cooperating with others or carrying out another's will is not his style. Gary likes to be the chief - or to go it alone.
Gary Oldman loves action and if others are settling down into a nice, comfortable little rut, then he is always ready to stir things up, do something new, make changes and introduce some fresh blood. Routine and sameness are tantamount to death for him. He is not afraid of trying something that has never been done before, and even though he may sometimes be perceived as a fool, Gary Oldman also discovers, invents and initiates things that others will later emulate. Taking risks and following his own star are the breath of life for Oldman, and he wilts (or gets very frustrated and angry) if he cannot do this.
He is spontaneous, impulsive, direct, enthusiastic and assertive. Gary Oldman believes in the power of positive thinking and positive action, and he perceives himself as a strong, even invincible, person. Gary Oldman hates being ill or in a position of dependency. Accepting his own human limitations and emotional needs is often difficult for him.
He is basically aggressive in his attitudes and less adept at relating to others, picking up on subtle messages and nuances, listening, nurturing and harmonizing. He is often so fired up about his own projects or goals that he inadvertently runs over or ignores other people's feelings and interests. Being receptive and appreciative of others' contributions, ideas and feelings would be highly instrumental in improving Oldman's relationships. His impatience to get on with things causes Gary Oldman to be rather insensitive, thereby alienating others unnecessarily. He also frequently tries to accomplish his goals through anger or temper tantrums. Gary Oldman would gain much by learning to slow down, relax and sometimes just let things be, however his energetic, restless nature rarely allows Gary Oldman to do so.
His career, reputation and public image are very important to Oldman. Gary Oldman has a strong desire to be influential or make his mark on the world. He is not satisfied with the personal sphere alone; his ambitions include making a major contribution and receiving broad recognition for his unique effort and gifts. Gary Oldman may undervalue the personal or inner facet of life.
Oldman can be an inspiring leader of a team or group effort. His dynamism and energy evokes the same in others, and he sees healthy competition between people as a plus. Generally, Gary Oldman enjoys fine health as well.
Oldman occasionally gambles, splurges or overextends himself in ways that may be at odds with his usual way of doing things. Exaggerating his accomplishments or spending too much in order to impress others and build up his own self-esteem can be a problem. However, Gary Oldman also has faith and an optimistic side, which enable him to recover from the negative consequences of his excesses, and to learn from them.
While Gary Oldman does have a strong drive, he frequently holds himself back. One of his challenges lies in learning to endure frustration and to patiently overcome the obstacles in his life (or his own internal caution and resistance!).
However he also has a more somber side, which keeps Oldman's optimism from becoming ungrounded or overblown. Gary Oldman tends to seesaw between his faith, vision and high aspirations, and his caution and realism (or fear!). He cannot and does not rely on good luck or grace alone, and he accepts the need for hard work. His skeptical or "somber" side is described below.
He is often plagued by feelings of personal inadequacy, inhibitions and self-doubt. Gary Oldman has a cautious, realistic attitude toward life and is highly responsible and disciplined with regard to his obligations and duties. Gary Oldman tends to work and struggle more than necessary and to take himself too seriously.
He is prone to fanaticism and cannot go halfway in anything he does. His extremism may seem (and actually be) obsessive and somewhat blind. That is, Gary Oldman does not always consciously understand why he feels as driven or intense about a given course of action as he does. There is a strong element of fate or inevitability in Oldman's life. A significant death or loss in his close relationships is likely to profoundly influence Gary Oldman and shape important life decisions and he may consciously seek out intense, life-or-death experiences as well.
Oldman is capable of extraordinary physical or mental efforts to gain success and achieve something that will bring him recognition and respect. Gary Oldman has a strong need for authority and power over others and is likely to perform better in a leading position.
Gary Oldman tends to impose his will upon others in a rather ruthless way, but on the other hand he may also be imposed upon by others. Gary feels a constant need to fight for leadership and has a great desire to become a public figure.
