Frida Kahlo motivation
Behind Kahlo's strong, proud appearance (described in the previous chapter), there is a very tender, sensitive, sentimental, feeling person. She is probably much shyer and more private than initially presumed.
Frida has powerful emotional attachments to the past, her family, her childhood, places she associates with safety and security, and her beginnings. It is very important to Kahlo to maintain a connection with her roots and heritage and keep family bonds strong. Loyal, devoted, and sentimental, Kahlo tends to cling to whatever is dear to her - be it a person, a familiar place, or a cherished possession.
She is sympathetic, nurturing, supportive and very sensitive to the emotional needs of other people. Frida likes to be needed and to care for others, and she often worries about the people she loves. Frida Kahlo has a very strong need for a sense of belonging and acceptance, and much of her life centers on her home. She is more concerned about people and their feelings than with power, achievement, or position in society. Kindness, consideration and tenderness are more meaningful to Frida Kahlo than any sort of honor the world can bestow.
She is primarily emotional and her views are often dominated by her feelings and her own personal, subjective experiences, rather than reason, logic or abstract principles. It is difficult for her to judge situations fairly and objectively because her personal sympathies and loyalties usually factor in. Frida Kahlo takes things very personally and sometimes builds a wall around herself to shield herself from pain and rejection. Frida Kahlo feels rather shy and vulnerable at heart. She also tends to be moody and experiences frequent mood swings. Frida Kahlo needs to have a place and time in her life to withdraw, introspect, dream and replenish herself; otherwise Frida Kahlo becomes cranky and unhappy with those around her.
Frida Kahlo functions in an instinctive, irrational manner and likes to immerse herself in creative activities where she can express her feelings, imagination and instincts. Kahlo often loves to cook, since it can be both creative and a way to nurture and nourish others. Frida Kahlo also has a great affinity for music, because it evokes and communicates feelings that may be difficult or impossible to put into words.
Her compassion, sensitivity, and imagination are Kahlo's strong points. Her faults include an inability to let go of the past and move forward, clannishness and prejudice, and a tendency for self-pity when facing hardship.
Leading groups and classes, and being involved in community efforts, social activities, events or movements are areas where Frida Kahlo really shines and expresses her creativity. An awareness of politics or the larger social impact of individual actions is natural to her.
Highly competitive and easily provoked, Frida Kahlo needs challenges and opponents to pit herself against. Frida thrives on contest and rivalry. At times her vigorous, combative way of achieving the things she wants antagonizes other people. If Frida Kahlo uses force too often, others will turn against her and oppose her at every turn.
If she follows her true nature, her life is apt to be unconventional, unusual, controversial and full of insecurity and excitement. Frida Kahlo cannot and will not be forced into a pre-set mold, and Frida finds it difficult to conform. Her offbeat interests and tastes lead Kahlo to ventures that others may consider too "far-out" or experimental. Frida Kahlo has a very creative, inventive streak.
Along with her energy and drive Frida Kahlo has high ideals and an active fantasy life. There is a dreamer and an idealist in Kahlo, as well as a doer and a fighter. Frida wants to win but not at others' expense, and this maybe something of a dilemma for her.
Sensitive and imaginative, she is attracted to artistic and creative pursuits and to mysticism. Frida Kahlo is impressionable and receptive, and often has experiences that are unusual and unexplainable by the rational mind. Frida has an abundance of dreams, visions and longings, but does not always have the concentrated will and stamina to make them materialize. Gentle, idealistic and peace loving, Frida often seeks to avoid the harsh realities of life. Frida has an ethereal quality about her.
Her physical energy is strong and Frida Kahlo is able to make an extra effort and work quite hard at any task she wants to do. Kahlo can act quickly and she gets a great deal accomplished in a hurry. But Frida Kahlo also has a tendency to be reckless and accident-prone.
