Eric Nies motivation
Though Eric Nies cares very much about his dignity and the way he is perceived by others (as described on the previous page), he has a very mischievous, playful side that pokes fun of anyone who takes himself too seriously (including himself!). Also, though his great loyalty was highlighted in the previous chapter, fortunately he is also flexible and playful, so he does not allow his commitments to become too burdensome.
Eric Nies is, in many ways, an eternal child. His mind is bright, alert, curious, flexible, playful and always eager for new experiences - and his attention span is often quite brief. Nies grasps ideas quickly and once his initial curiosity has been satisfied, he is ready to move on. Eric Nies craves frequent change and variety, as well as new situations and people.
It may be hard for Eric Nies to decide just where his talents and true vocation lie, for he has a multitude of interests and is loathe limiting himself by concentrating on just one. He is easily distracted by all of the other fascinating possibilities. His curiosity and restlessness propel Eric toward many different experiences in life, and he is willing to taste or try anything once. Doing the same thing over and over again, even if it is something he does well, is tantamount to drudgery for Nies.
Eric Nies lives in his head a great deal - reading, observing, thinking, spinning ideas around - and he needs mental stimulation every bit as much as he needs food and drink. In fact, if Eric had to choose between a good book or movie and a good lunch, he would very likely choose the former. Eric Nies has a creative mind and he often lives by his wits.
He is also a very social creature, with a strong need to communicate and interact with people. He enjoys using and playing with words and has a real flair for getting his ideas across in a clever, interesting, articulate manner. Writing and/or speaking are areas he has talent for.
Eric Nies also has a rather lighthearted and mischievous sense of humor, and often does not take anything too seriously. Though he craves emotional involvement, it is hard for Eric Nies to achieve it, for he is frequently unwilling to commit himself to anything, to take responsibility or to limit his personal freedom and mobility.
His happiness lies in using his creativity and language skills to communicate something meaningful, teach, inspire, or bring people together. Eric has an unbiased mind and can usually offer a fresh, clear, uncluttered perspective. His faults are his lack of constancy and persistence, and his tendency to overlook or ignore deep emotional issues and other people's feelings.
His career, reputation and public image are very important to Nies. Eric Nies has a strong desire to be influential or make his mark on the world. He is not satisfied with the personal sphere alone; his ambitions include making a major contribution and receiving broad recognition for his unique effort and gifts. Eric Nies may undervalue the personal or inner facet of life.
Eric Nies aims high, dreams big, and has a tremendous sense of what he is capable of achieving. Overconfidence, grandiosity, lack of humility and/or extreme discontent in modest circumstances may be his faults. Generally, however, Nies' great expectations and enterprising spirit lead to success. Business, especially when there is an element of risk and speculation involved, is ideally suited to Eric.
However he also has a more somber side, which keeps Nies' optimism from becoming ungrounded or overblown. Eric Nies tends to seesaw between his faith, vision and high aspirations, and his caution and realism (or fear!). He cannot and does not rely on good luck or grace alone, and he accepts the need for hard work. His skeptical or "somber" side is described below.
Eric Nies has a mature and often somber demeanor. He is serious, reserved, self-disciplined, highly responsible and conscientious. He progresses rather slowly in life, through his own efforts and persistence. He is also rather stern and judgmental, especially with himself. Cautious and careful, it is difficult for him to really let go, be spontaneous and playful. Eric likes to be in control of himself.
While he is realistic and conscientious (or overly conscientious), as described above, Eric Nies also has an otherworldly, dreamy, or mystically-inclined side, as described below.
Eric Nies is extremely sensitive, compassionate and giving, often to his own detriment. His ideals and spiritual values motivate Eric Nies, and he cannot live for personal gain or materialistic concerns alone. There must be an element of beauty, magic, imagination, inspiration or creativity in what he does. Otherwise Eric Nies becomes listless and aimless. The arts, theater, music and/or charitable work are ideally suited to Eric.
Eric Nies deeply believes in his own power and his ability to survive any change and emerge victorious from any difficulty. Eric has tremendous inner resources and strength. Intense, strong willed, and zealous, he pursues his desires and goals with complete dedication and singleness of purpose, and he may be somewhat compulsive and even fanatical at times. Eric likes to live intensely and has no respect for people who are weak or avoid confronting life and their own destiny.
His vitality is very strong and he is likely to be a workaholic. If Eric Nies is not careful, he may work so hard that he becomes exhausted, leaving himself open to physical breakdown. Eric Nies also has a strong drive to win and to dominate others.
He is creative and talented, but must develop self-discipline to channel his energies productively. Eric Nies may feel that everything is going to be all right, that he cannot lose and may take risks by gambling or speculating, which could result in disappointments.
