Many of the traits discussed in the previous chapter are emphasized again below. His intuition is usually correct, but there are also times when Chad Smith obstinately and passionately pursues his goal when a more flexible attitude and open communication with others would benefit him greatly.

Quiet, deep, emotionally complex and intensely private, he is not a person who is easy to get to know and understand. Chad Smith is extremely sensitive but disinclined to show it, and he only allows a special few into his inner world. Like a wary animal, he is cautious and mistrustful of those he does not know until "he sniffs them out". He is highly instinctive and intuitive. Chad Smith usually has a strong, immediate gut reaction to people, even though he may be unable to clearly articulate why he feels the way he does. His feelings and perceptions go deeper than words.

Chad Smith also has a powerful need for deep emotional relationships and he forms very intense love bonds and attachments. He is possessive and often jealous of anyone or anything that he perceives as a threat to his relationship with someone he loves. When Chad Smith commits himself to someone or something, he is wholeheartedly devoted and expects complete loyalty in return. Chad merges with or "marries" the person he loves at a very deep level and therefore separations are extremely painful for him, and often stormy and nasty. When Smith has been wounded, he is not inclined to turn the other cheek and will retaliate if at all possible. Chad will most certainly never forget the hurt and he often harbors grievances and resentment for a very long time. Forgiveness does not come easily to him.

Whatever he does, Chad does with passion and fervor, and he often goes to extremes. Smith can be hot or cold, but never lukewarm about anything. Smith can also be very narrow-minded: either he is 100% involved in something or it does not exist for him at all. Rarely is Chad Smith emotionally detached and objective. He definitely has a fanatical streak. He is also immensely strong-willed and his tenacity in pursuing his objectives often borders on obsession. He is filled with fierce pride, courage and emotional strength.

Chad Smith loves mysteries and is deeply attracted to the hidden, dark, secret side of life. Chad never takes things at face value and is always probing beneath the surface of people and situations to discover what is really going on. Chad Smith tends to be more of a cynic than an idealist.

Chad Smith tends to get involved in the helping professions or in activities where his efforts are hidden, behind the scenes, unacknowledged, or unknown to the public. Asserting himself or getting up in front of an audience may be exceedingly uncomfortable for Smith.

Chad has lofty aspirations but does not struggle or labor to achieve them. His self-confidence and inner harmony attract success and benefit him in an almost magical way. His optimism and cheerful generosity also win Smith many allies and successes in life.

However he also has a more somber side, which keeps Smith's optimism from becoming ungrounded or overblown. Chad Smith tends to seesaw between his faith, vision and high aspirations, and his caution and realism (or fear!). He cannot and does not rely on good luck or grace alone, and he accepts the need for hard work. His skeptical or "somber" side is described below.

He is often plagued by feelings of personal inadequacy, inhibitions and self-doubt. Chad Smith has a cautious, realistic attitude toward life and is highly responsible and disciplined with regard to his obligations and duties. Chad Smith tends to work and struggle more than necessary and to take himself too seriously.

Although he takes himself and his responsibilities seriously, there is also a part of Chad Smith that rebels against rules and restrictions and the need to contend with outside authority. Smith can feel torn between conforming to the rules or fulfilling his obligations, and breaking free of them. His wilder side will now be described.

He is an original! Chad Smith radiates a sort of electrical excitement about the things he is interested in, and conveys this to others, but he also gets bored rather quickly. Chad does not mind being a bit unusual or breaking a few rules either.

He prefers more serious kinds of conversation with his friends and neighbors rather than small talk. Because his communication is clear and concise, Chad Smith can impress others by taking control of negotiations or business dealings.
