Many of the traits discussed in the previous chapter are emphasized again below. His intuition is usually correct, but there are also times when Jonas Salk obstinately and passionately pursues his goal when a more flexible attitude and open communication with others would benefit him greatly.

Quiet, deep, emotionally complex and intensely private, he is not a person who is easy to get to know and understand. Jonas Salk is extremely sensitive but disinclined to show it, and he only allows a special few into his inner world. Like a wary animal, he is cautious and mistrustful of those he does not know until "he sniffs them out". He is highly instinctive and intuitive.
